There are phenomena that go beyond our imagination - from the mysteries of quantum mechanics to the power of meditation and the mysterious energy of stones. It is quite obvious that forces exist that reach far beyond what humans can perceive. How were the Egyptians able to build the pyramids or the Incas Machu Picchu with the means they had at the time?
The mysterious world of crystal skulls also joins this series of great mysterious world of crystal skulls They originate from cultures around the globe and have one thing in common: they are artfully crafted from rock crystal. rock crystal and other gemstones perfectly symmetrical, without any recognizable tool marks, long before modern stone carving techniques existed.
Even more mysterious, however, is the function that these artifacts, some of which are life-size, had for various cultures: According to tradition, they were believed to store ancient knowledge, channel cosmic energy and even influence the fate of mankind. This is where myth, spirituality and science meet - and reach the limits of our understanding.
Finds of historical crystal skulls have been documented since the 18th century. The most famous of these worldwide is the Mitchell-Hedges crystal skull. It is said to have been discovered in 1924 by the British adventurer and writer Frederick Albert Mitchell-Hedges and his stepdaughter Anna during excavations in Lubaantun (Belize) and was later stylized into a legend as the "skull of destiny" and a magical artefact. Today, however, it is considered more likely that Mitchell-Hedges acquired it from an art dealer in the 1940s. In any case, Anna played a central role in the popularization of the mystery surrounding the cult skulls. At the same time, a worldwide esoteric boom emerged, particularly in the 1970s - and thus fertile ground for ancient myths about secret knowledge inscribed in crystal. At the same time, the trade in both historical and modern skulls flourished.
The Legend of the 13 Crystal Skulls is one of the best-known tales: When they are all united at the right time, they are said to reveal ancient knowledge - about our origins and our future. Of course, this radiance has not stopped at popular culture: stories and films have turned the crystal skulls into symbols of the mysterious - even the most daring archaeologist in film history has followed in the footsteps of the Maya in the search for the famous 13 skulls.
This enduring fascination makes the Amethyst Welt from March 21, March 2026 the focus of its new special exhibition at the Edelsteinhaus. Under the title "CRYSTAL SKULLS – Key to Hidden Worlds?" it is presenting the largest exhibition of its kind – with 20 spectacular exhibits from different eras and cultures, from South America to Central Europe, Tibet, India, and Indonesia. Until now, a maximum of five such richly decorated, cultic skulls could be seen at the same time – Maissau clearly surpasses this. Each skull tells its own story between myth, spirituality, and cultural significance. As an additional highlight, the unique show presents one of only 30 original and certified Indiana Jones film photos featuring Hollywood star Harrison Ford.
Discover the secret power of the crystal skulls up close - and feel their hidden power for yourself.
The special exhibition will be on display until the end of 2027.
